The GROSE-MACDONALD 2005 Double Marathon
On 4th August 2005 we set out on a single day Double Marathon from Barnard Castle, County Durham to Settle, North Yorkshire.
The total distance was 62 miles.
We started at 6am, the weather was ideal, not too hot and not too cold. The weight we were carrying added to the challenge.
After 3hrs of being on the move we reached the North Yorkshire border.

We pressed on throughout the morning and things continued to go well.

The original idea was to do the run over a two day period and spend a night in the Village of Hawes, North Yorkshire,
however we decided to make it a little harder for ourselves and reduced it to the single day. So when we passed Hawes around lunch time it
was a welcome sight.

It was after leaving Hawes that things really got tough. We were straight on to the fastest route which was the Pennine Way.
The intial ascent following the route went well untill the weather closed in on us. The plan was to keep on the move. Cold, cramp and plain tiredness became our
enemies though we pressed on.

As we decended down into Horton-in-Ribblesdale though the weather condtions improved..

After a hard days work we had an ice cold pint waiting for us!
